Zastava 101 fever culminated during 1979. when 88.918 models were produced in Kragujevac.
In 1981. Zastava 101 was proclaimed to be car of decade (and that was true).
In 1991. Zastava 101 with serial number 1 000 000 (million) was produced.
De Luxe had red seats, red carpet, chrome trims on door interior covers, wood imitation in front of right front seat. De Luxe had also transparent gear knob with Zastava`s logo in it, and chrome exterior side trims.
Afterwards Standard Zastava 101 was changed a little bit, radiator mask was painted black (early models had gray radiator mask), and it was produced (without changes) until 1979. During 1979 Standard model had name Zastava 101 B, standard seats were substituted with seats taken from Zastava 101L.
In 1976 De Luxe model was substituted with new model Zastava 101 L- with few changes (new bumpers-with rubber trim, interior was reduced – especially door trim panels, seat backs were modified so they could be laid down) . Radiator mask was different – with chrome trims, Zastava 101 L had rear light for driving backwards, electrical water pump for washing windscreen, thermometer for engine temperature, cigarette lighter and servo-brakes.
In 1976, there was major change – all engines starting with number 0076986 had substituted camshaft – old was 14mm cam wide, new 20 mm cam wide.During 1979. Zastava produced new models Zastava 101 S (Super) ili SC (Super Confort)- which were basically the same.
They had new bumpers without buffers, square head lights, new radiator mask with two silver trims, black side mirror, black wipers, small black wheel caps, rear windscreen heater, new control lamps (hand brake, bad brakes). Door trim panels had chrome trim. Future owners could chose colors of interior. They were produced with 1116 ccm i 1290 ccm engines, carburetors IPM 32 MGV 25/250(1290ccm) ,IPM 32 MGV 10(1116ccm) with compression ratio 9,2:1(1116 ccm), 9,1:1 (1290 ccm).
Model Confort was brand new model, first with notable changes (parts written above). This was the first model which had 17/64 transmission.
Model SC had two barrel WEBER 30/32 DMTR 90/250 , 4-2-1 exhaust, 64 Hp(Horse Power).
Model MEDITERAN was 2-door car, had round head lights like early models. Two kind of engine: Standard 1116 ccm with 55 Hp and 1290 ccm with 73 Hp (same engine concept like in the model Special).
Also in 1979 Zastava 101 Special was introduced – it had advanced instruments with oil pressure control and rpm-meter and powerful engine,1290 ccm, had WEBER 32/32 DMTR 90/250 ,4-2-1 exhaust ,73 Hp.
All models had new type of steering wheel introduced with model Confort – with inscription ZASTAVA on horn switch. Models SC and Super had new Zastava logo on horn switch. Head rests were integrated with seats.
During 1983. new models were introduced: Zastava 101 GT/GTL 55/65
These models had many changes: new higher chrome bumpers-front with integrated position lights and side indicators. New radiator mask with ZASTAVA sign and sliver stripes was built in. New side skirts, new wheel design with new wheel caps.

Suspension was redesigned, new was softer, vehicle was lower, so it was more stable on the road than early models. Some changes was also made on brakeing system.
Engines on these models were with little changes: standard 1116 ccm (55Hp) with one barrel carburetor IPM 32 MGV 12 and 1301 ccm (65Hp) with two barrel WEBER 30/32 DMTR 90/250. New thing was steel cable for accelerator control, early models had special system of levers.
During 1987. new models were introduced with new name YUGO 1.3/1.3 GX
Differences were small, beside new insignias with Y instead Z. Interior was also the same – more colors were available. Engines were the same with 4-2-1 exhausts on all models.
During 1988 new models were introduced with more differences. New name was Yugo SKALA 55/ 65.
Engines were the same like on earlier models, only revision was BOSCH ignition system.
Model Skala 65 had 1301ccm engine with new two barrel WEBER 7Y2M-RA with electronic choke, 5-speed gear box and 17/64 transmission.
These models were produced until 1994 when they were modified (suspension and gear box), new mark was Skala 55C/65C.
ZASTAVA Skala 55C and Skala 65C were produced with minor revisions – bumpers are plastic and thin (taken from model Zastava 128), wheel caps are taken from model Florida.
During 2007. dashboard was revised, modern dashboard with modern instruments can be ordered – it is actually remake of famous ZASTAVA 101 SPECIAL Instruments (with integrated RPM-meter).
Zastava 101 or Zastava Skala is still a Legend in Serbia. It is solid, not too expensive car, usually driven by Zastava FANS.
Early models can be seen all over the Europe, still running as old-timers and collection cars.In Serbia early models are still forcing their mileage – co-writer of this text, also driving 1979. model with 170 000 km passed without major mechanical service, my friend has `73 Zastava 101 witch has passed over 400 000km (without major mechanical repair), and a neighbor who`s `75 Zastava 101 passed over 700 000km( engine never had big service repair, and still in good shape) – so Vehicle of success wasn`t coincidental nick name given by official factory marketing.
